EMDR Services

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences and distressing memories. It was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and is widely used for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and other psychological distress.

EMDR therapy is based on the idea that traumatic memories can become "stuck" in the brain, preventing proper emotional processing. The therapy helps the brain reprocess these memories using bilateral stimulation, such as:

  • Guided eye movements
  • Tapping
  • Auditory cues

During an EMDR session, the therapist helps the client recall a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, which is believed to mimic the natural memory processing that occurs during REM sleep. This process can help reduce the emotional intensity of the memory and reframe negative beliefs associated with it.

How We Can Help in a Therapy Session

At Capital Art Therapy LLC, we understand at some point we all experience uncomfortable emotions in our lives.  In an Art Therapy session, we offer strategies that can help people face their fears and anxieties, address symptoms of depression, increase mindfulness, learn relaxation strategies, process grief and loss, and boost self-esteem.  These are just a few areas where Art therapy can be useful.  Through the creative process, employing CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy), and with occasional take home assignments, one can recover motivation, gain new perspectives, and rekindle feelings of joy.  We enjoy the benefits of art making and know how to combine the process of creating to address stress or conflicts.  Offered to individuals ages 6 through adult, and for family sessions.  To learn if you might benefit from Art Therapy click below. We offer a free 15-minute consultation.

Welcome Kayla! Spring 25' Intern

Often found playing with crayons, colored pencils, and paint, Kayla's creative journey began when her grandmother gifted her disposable cameras as a child- sparking a desire to represent moments in a tangible form. Her early love for photography transformed into a passion for the arts as a whole—whether doodling in the margins of notebooks to discovering the magic of theater and performance. Kayla is currently pursuing a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy/ Counseling at Springfield College in Massachusetts, and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Visual and Performing Arts with a Studio concentration. She is grateful to be spending the spring semester at Capital Art Therapy to deepen her understanding of the connection between clinical practice and the arts.

Welcome Elizabeth 25'-26' Intern-

Hello! My name is Elizabeth O'Neill, a pre-licensed counselor with a passion for fostering healing and growth through human connection and expression. My practice blends Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), post-modern theories, and creative approaches for processing life’s experiences and one’s internal self. For younger clients, I utilize developmentally appropriate approaches for processing adversities and supporting healthy attachment through a variety of creative modalities. For adolescents and adults, I support clients through exploring internal family systems, complex traumas, and unearthing vital parts of one’s identity and purpose. Art has been a lifelong passion of mine, deepening my understanding of the vital mind-body connection. I create a space of compassion and unconditional acceptance where clients can safely explore their internal worlds. Currently completing my final year at Antioch University as a counseling intern, I also hold a degree in Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University and a degree in Early Childhood Education. My time serving others spans over a decade with experience in counseling in higher academia, early developmental intervention, and behavioral health services for both neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals. Beyond counseling, I find joy in musical expressions, cooking, and connecting to the natural world.
